Sometimes I have a similar problem (random black boxes and weird
patterns drawn on the screen) because when I originally set up X on my
box, I gave it a bogus value for VideoRam. I'd look through /etc/X11/
XF86Config-4 (or just XFConfig86, if you're still running X11 v. 3.x)
for an entry that says:
VideoRam <some number>
and comment it out. That fixes the problem for me.
Since I hosed my system in the very beginning, every time I get a new
xserver package, I have to jump through the same hoops. I'm sure these
config info is stored somewhere, but I haven't quite figured it out
where it is.
