I have a PCI sound card using this chipset. I'm running a 2.4.20
kernel with the following settings and it's working nicely:

CONFIG_SOUND=y
CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI=y
# CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI_FM is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI_MIDI is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI_JOYSTICK is not set
CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI_CM8738=y
# CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI_SPDIFINVERSE is not set
# CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI_SPDIFLOOP is not set
CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI_SPEAKERS=2

I don't have 2.4.18 source handy to compare, but I see that
CONFIG_SOUND_CMPCI is in 2.4.19. If you have the stock kernel, look
in /lib/modules/2.4.19-?/kernel/drivers/sound for the cm modules. If
it's not there, you'll have to compile.
