Did I get right source to update GNOME on new Debian 3.0 system(w/o an internet connection)?
Hi,
I am setting up a new desk and am ready to throw Debian Woody onto my 4 GB
HD, I have printed all sorts of crap, ranging from the official install
guide, to the Linux Cookbook, to the guide by Dwarf. Even found one called
"The Very Verbose Installation Guide to Debian". So, I SHOULD be okay with
the install, and I know where to come if I have any issues that I don't see
in the docs or list archives. (nudge nudge, wink wink!)
However, I want GNOME 2 on this machine, and I want to be able to download
the means to do this and burn it to a disk here at work. When I go to the
GNOME site, it directs me to instructions like this:
" For woody, you should use Gustavo Noronha's excellent backport of GNOME 2.
Add the following to your /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://people.debian.org/~kov/debian woody gnome2
deb-src http://people.debian.org/~kov/debian woody gnome2
Next, just run:
apt-get update
apt-get install gnome gdm2"
This won't do it for me, so I downloaded pretty much everything from this
ftp site:
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/desktop/2.0/2.0.3/sources/
Can someone check that link and tell me I can use those files, even if it is
harder? I am very new to Linux and have never used Debian even, but I
figure between all of the stuff that comes on the big distro, if I can bump
up to the newest GNOME 2, I will be happy with an offline system. Plus,
some of the smaller files and updates, like some of the other DE's and WM's
are not that large, and I can download them on my home 52k commection and
transfer them over to the other computer easier. I actually downloaded
these files a couple of weeks ago, knowing even less than I do now, and got
everything: the *.tar.gz, the *.tar.gz.tar, and the *.tar.gz.tar versions!
I guess I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to combine a T1
connection and a CD burner, so I scored everything I could in source form
and filled an entire 700 MB cd! I got sources for the latest KDE, all of
the window managers, games, Open Office, etc. that I could think of ahead of
time, and will start downloading stuff again for another monster collection.
I will read more about APT and learn how to use it offline but I guess I
need to get into a Debian install to get into that. So, I have gone on too
much, but just wanted some help from someone to tell me what I can do with
all of that source code on a Debian machine that is not on the web.
Did I get the right kinds of files or do I have to do it over?
