If I'm not wrong, gnome-desktop-environment is a virtual package used in
sid to install the entire gnome desktop.

If you want to install gnome in Sarge, install gnome and gnome-core
packages. 

Another point: gnome is a desktop environment which uses a window
manager (like sawfish, metacity or even E or Window Maker). Gdm is just
a graphical login screen like xdm or kdm.
