Luck with sarge-i386.netinst.iso?

Hi list!

I tried again with the sarge netinst iso from 
http://freedesktop.org/~daniel/d-i/

But had no better luck than the last time.

The menu hilite keeps pointing to network install (forget the exact wording)
and does not progress, so you have to do the things yourself.

Result is something that does not boot:

Kernel panic: can't find root at 03:46.

Has anybody got better luck with that great idea?

BTW: what does 03:46 refer to? Some sort of /dev entry?
Did not find much info at linux.debian.maint.boot
