Xterm and recognition of urls, html, php, etc

I am using mutt with vim as the editor.  I have seen where xterm was
set up at one time where http://, html, php, asp, etc where recognized
as to the type of information and the application that could use it.
How do I go about setting this up for mutt, vim, xterm, etc?  What do
I need to read?  Is this what mime type refers to?  Any help would be
appreciated.
