I diagnosed a very strange error with one of these cards last night.
Essentially, there seemed to be some type of hardware inconsistency that
caused the card to decide it was on a 10base2 network and not a 10baseT
network.

According to the kernel documentation it would:

"Prior to January, 2001 this driver would autoeselect the 10base2 or AUI
port if it didn't detect activity on the 10baseT port. It would then
get stuck on the 10base2 port and a driver reload was necessary to
switch back to 10baseT. This behaviour could not be prevented with a
module option override.:

This was on a 2.4.18bf2-4 kernel. I didn't think that this would happen
but when I forced the module to only use 10baseT the card suddenly worked
again.

After Knoppix has loaded, have you tried manually probing the 3c509
driver(s)?
