Thanks, I'll look at that.  It may be the explanation. I haven't set the
option, because the man page says that if you do this then by default all
patches are applied and, being the first time I had patched a kernel, I
wanted to be sure which ones were (I like to try to minimise problems,
there are enough others unconnected with patching).  I turned to
http://newbiedoc.sourceforge.net/system/kernel-pkg.html for guidance - and
this provided confusing advice (see previous thread: kernel patch
question).

So, for clarification, should I be running:-

make-kpkg --added_patches=<a,b,etc> clean

in order to remove the applied patches?

If so, the document above might beneficially be amended, and the man page
could be clarified by adding to "Please note that the patches are 
UN-installed  from  the  source when you run the clean target" something
like "together with this option, or with  PATCH_THE_KERNEL set to yes".
