AFAIR make mrproper removes your .config, so better swap your first
two steps and retry.

Or do '# make clean' instead.

If that's clean enough for the OP's intentions, sure, why bother.

I got used to do a make mrproper after reading about it in the Kernel
Readme's Installation Instructions, but normally 'clean' ought to be
just that ;)
