You could move something in /usr to it's own partition, e.g. /usr/share.
Or move somthing to another partition and symlink it back. Or remove
stuff you do not need. Or change the size of your /usr partition to
suit your needs. Which is probably the best idea, because if your /usr
if full directly after installation it very likeley is too small for
you.

What exactly did not work? How does the line in your fstab look like?
What was the error message?

Try to mount it manually:

mount -t fstype /dev/hdd1 /some/dir
