I recommend you run lspci, that should list your hardware. It will give
you something like this:

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8753 [P4X266 AGP] (rev 01)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8633 [Apollo Pro266 AGP]
00:08.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT86C100A [Rhine] (rev 06)
00:09.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8029(AS)
00:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07)
00:0a.1 Input device controller: Creative Labs SB Live! MIDI/Game Port (rev 07)
00:11.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233 PCI to ISA Bridge
00:11.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586/B/686A/B PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
00:11.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 1b)
00:11.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 1b)
00:11.4 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB (rev 1b)
00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 70)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV200 QW [Radeon 7500]

In this case my built-in ethernet controller is identified as:
00:08.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT86C100A [Rhine] (rev 06)
all I have to do is load the via-rhine module to get ethernet to work.

If you can't figure things out, please reply and attach the output of
lspci so that we can recommend a course of action.

Hope that helps,

Bijan
