tiff less

Hi,
Two questions:
1.-Images:
I need to convert a tiff image (or jpg, gif) to a matrix of numbers 
(0-256). Matlab and Octave does it. But I want to scriptized the 
process, cause I've got a lot of images to convert.

2.-less+accents
I receive emails with foreing accents. I use mutt with the builtin 
pager. But the accents appear as the code numbers.
I have the same problem with less (but I've not with more and vim).
I have my LANG=C.
