networking problem (perhaps with Autonegotiate?)

Hi,
my neighbour has offered to put me on his home network
which is connected to the outside world by broadband
but when we try my web browser seems to hang (i.e.
seems to be trying to look up, say, google but never
finds it nor gives up).

his (windows ME) network uses 10base2 connections, and
my dmesg output is below (dmesg.txt). two things about
the dmesg:
- it doesn't record the fact that after the lines:
eth0: Initial media type Autonegotiate.
eth0: MII #24 status 7849, link ....(etc)
eth0: Initial media type Autonegotiate.
eth0: MII #24 status 7849, link ....(etc)

when it boots it also prints:
Operation failed.
done.

- Also, i was wondering if there is an irq conflict as
i see both my eth0 and "sym53c875-0" (what ever that
is?) want irq 11.

all i'm doing to try to connect is putting the DNS in
the /etc/resolv.conf and then typing:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.10.90 netmask 255.255.255.0
(actually every time i type this two more lines like

eth0: Initial media type Autonegotiate.
eth0: MII #24 status 7849, link ....(etc)

get added to the dmesg.)

If i try to add the option "media <ANYTHING>" to the
ifconfig i get "SIOCSIFMAP: Operation not supported"
(same if i try the option "irq <n>")

hoping someone can help me!
cheers
brett
