Does not help :-)
When I boot off the old Kernel (2.2.20) floppy, the system connects
without any problem while booting. I looked at the kernel options but
did not find one for DHCP. Was it a part of pppoeconf? I have TCP/IP 
and other standard options enabled in the kernel.
