kde not starting on recent (fresh) stable installs
Hey everyone,
I think that there is some sort of weirdness in KDE on STABLE (woody)
for sure! If you will remember (or list-archives, whatever works for
you), I had a problem with KDE segfaulting on stable, where it only goes
upto "peripherals" section.
Today, I tried installing stable on a laptop today and it crashed at
the SAME place (KDE startup screen, starting "Peripherals" section)! My
jaw hit the ground!
The laptop has an ATI Mobility 9000 card and so none of the XFree
drivers that came with stable were recent enough, so I used the vesa
driver. Although in all probability, this is NOT an X problem since
other window managers like gnome do work.
So my conclusion is that there are 3 possibilites:
1. This only happens with ATI cards and the "vesa" driver. But this
is a long shot since X itself works and gnome works totally fine, no
display corruption etc. Even blackbox works.
2. There is something wrong with the way that I am installing it.
I've done stuff the same way before, so I would expect it to work,
especially with Woody/Stable which is not a constantly moving target.
3. There is a bug in some of the KDE stuff. This is only possible
with the security updates, since KDE worked great a few months ago on
stable (same desktop machines). I hesistate to use this reason since
security update packages are highly tested (right?) and many, many other
people would have screamed about this problem.
Anyone else having the same symptoms?
Thanks,
