My advice for buying hardware:
First, make sure that everything has open source drivers in the debian
kernel. (This is an excellent way to buy windows hardware as well,
since if its supported under linux, its probably not total crap.)
Then, read the headers for the drivers under the kernel source. Good
info there. Google for opinions on the linux driver support.
Then hit the hardware review websites and check the systems out.
Google for 'stability' tests since, IMHO, 5% more on a benchmark is a
lot less important then stability.
Oh, and remember, for the best deal, chart the price/performance ratio
of boards, processors, and memory. Maximize the "bang-for-the-buck"
factor.
