apt-get; all messed up by update...

I have a Woody system that has been running for over a year now without much change, and I just tried to do an apt-update, and then apt-upgrade, and the whole thing seems to be totally messed up. (see below)

I hope I can recover it, as I have had apt do this to me several times over the past years, and had to completely re-load a few times. Why does this happen? Is apt too fragile..?
My

Thanks for any hints..!
