Turning off DPMS gets rid of blanking completely. I'd like it to blank
my screen if I really am away.

I'm not sure. I'm using a default Debian kernel.

Which device do you use in you XFree86 configuration?
I'm using /dev/input/mice

Btw I just remembered that a while ago someone posted to this group
and he had a USB keyboard and mouse and this problem was no fun... So
I'll check the archives to see what he did.
