Limit on the width of --help text?

When doing

  <program> --help

I usually get a text that is not larger than 80 columns, which is
fine because 80 is the default width of terminals. But with French
translations such as

  LANG=fr_FR ls --help
or
  LANG=fr_FR whois --help

I get a wider text, difficult to read.

What is recommended for such a text?
