tee displays its input on standard output as well as writing it to the
file.

You need quotes, and you need '\|' rather than '|'. Try this:

  grep -v '\(archive\|from\)'

Alternatively, extended regular expressions make grouping slightly
easier:

  egrep -v '(archive|from)'
