Kernel will not compile

I did the following:

apt-get install gcc
apt-get install kernel-package
apt-get install kernel-source.2.4.18
apt-get install libc6-dev
apt-get install tk8.3
apt-get install libncurses5-dev

tar -jxf kernel-source-2.4.18.tar.bz2

make-kpkg clean

make-kpkg --append-to-version=.030320 kernel_image

The following error occurs:

In file included from ksyms.c:50
/usr/src/Kernel-source-2.4.18/include/asm/checksum.h:72:30:Missing
terminating " character
***other errors after this within the same header file

Anyone know why this is not compiling?
