> How about > > /etc/hosts.deny > /etc/hosts.allow > hehe .. it turns out that somehow iptables added a few default rules to the INPUT chain on the machine. and i was only seeing the rules which seemed fine but overlooked the default rule in the brackets which said DROP. i changed that and now everything is working fine ... thanks a lot to everyone for their suggestions.
