That's from XFree86 3.3.6, which is still needed for some cards that
aren't supported in 4.x.  You almost certainly want xserver-xfree86
instead.

(1) It's not particularly a kernel issue; (2) the older X server is
probably compiled with a minimum set of drivers.  Your kernel should
be fine, but changing to the newer X server would help.

(That having been said, you are aware of the difference between the
'nv' and non-free 'nvidia' drivers?  You need the latter for
accelerated 3-D support, and that requires some kernel support.)

Yes, they both use XFree86.  If you have a working configuration under
Red Hat you can probably come very close to having something that
works by just copying over the XF86Config file.
