cannot use lilo 22.5.3 duplicate volume ids

Hi.  Without changing the lilo.conf, after upgrading the latest sid,
when I ran lilo which was 2.5.3, I got an error stating that
/dev/hda1 and /dev/hdc1 had the same volume serial and it would not
continue.  It said to use -z -M to resolve, but I tried
-z -M /dev/hda and -z -M /dev/hdc , but neither did any good.

I downgraded lilo temporarily so I could continue, but what is the
solution to this problem?

Any assistance would be appreciated.
