I would also suggest AbiWord, Emacs (yes, it runs on Windows) and Cygwin.
Also go to http://freshmeat.net and http://www.sourceforge.net/ and look up
windows in their category listings - there's actually quite a few Free windows
programs, not all of them ports from Unix.
