you were likely lucky. it may compile fine but it may not work in the
same was as compiled with gcc 2.95, but it may work fine. the developers
(last I checked) did not reccomend gcc 3.x for the kernels(yet), but
that's not to say it's impossible to get working.

same goes for earlier kernels, back in the 2.0.x days the supported compiler
was 2.7.2.3(I think) and they did not reccomend egcs, or newer versions
of gcc(2.8.0 etc), I compiled many kernels with gcc 8.0 and never remember
having a problem..but it wasn't a supported config(don't ask for help
if you have a problem)
