Strange font trouble in xfonts-scalable

For some strange reason, Courier 10 Pitch Regular is the same as Courier
10 Pitch Itallic. (4.2.1-6 on Sid).  Any ideas about what could cause
this and how to correct it?  

As near as I can tell, the files are installed correctly
(usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1), and just to be sure, I reinstalled the
package, to no avail.  

Previews of the font files in Konqueror look O.K, but in
gonme-font-properties and `kcmshell fonts` the Regular is Itallic.

Also noted that Bold Itallic looks just like Bold for Courier 10 Pitch.
