Kernel 2.5.69, SSH and ATI

I tried to get some new hardware (a VIA KT400 mainboard) running and had to
try 2.5.69 to get agpgart working. Right now, I have about everything up and
running, but the most notable thing missing is SSH.

When I try to log in to the machine via SSH, the client hangs and in
/var/log/daemon, I get the message "FATAL: Module /dev/pts/0 not found". I
have devfs, Unix98 PTYs and /dev/pts compiled into the kernel and devfsd is
running.

The second problem I'm encountering with 2.5 is the ATI driver for X11 which I
need for my Radeon 9500pro (not supported by DRI project yet). The kernel
module doesn't compile with the 2.5 kernel because ATI doesn't support 2.4
yet.

Any ideas I could try? I can't get that thing running under 2.4 until support
for the chipset is finally backported, so I'm kinda stuck with 2.5. I tried
googling for those problems without too much success.
