autobuilding

I would like to be able to insert a floppy that will build a system from
partitioning to installing the system. I have looked at FAI, but,
frankly, I don't want to take the time to get that working. Has anyone
done such a thing? Would they be willing to share their disk image,
or,even answer some questions?

What I have in mind is building a kernel with the correct NIC driver and
doing an ifconfig to a standard IP address. This should take
significantly less than 1.4 MB. I would also like to do
either NFS or automount on a head node to get any utilities I can't fit
unto the disk. We would need to hafe sfdsk write the partition table and have mkfs
build the file systems without interaction. I can then dd to clone a
disk from a completed node. Has anyone done this?
