Write down galeon, metacity, and gnomecore on a piece of paper. Let Apt remove them. When it's done, apt-get install them back...
I'm guessing that gnomecore will want to take quite a bit with it though. Also, you could 'apt-get upgrade' instead and avoid having any packages removed. It won't ADD any new packages though. Does 'dist-upgrade' list NEW packages it wants to add ?? If so, get out that piece of paper and pencil again... :-)
