[rephrase] home rolled kernel 2.4.18 hangs on cdrom

I've compiled a 2.4.18 kernel but the machine hangs on
the cdrom during boot. I'm totally lost. RTFM's
welcome if accompanied by the source of the FM I
should R.

When booting with a stock kernel(2.2.20) gives the
following excerpt:

--------- begin dmesg excerpt ------
hda: FJUITSU MPB3064ATU E, ATA DISK drive
hdb: NEC CD-ROM DRIVE:251, ATAPI CDROM drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
hda: FUJITSU MPB3064ATU E, 6178MB w/0kB Cache,\
     CHS=13410/15/63
hdb: ATAPI 4X CD-ROM changer w/4 slots, 128kB Cache\
     Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.11
---------- end dmesg excerpt -------

With my kernel the boot sequence ends with the second
hda message above. I figured maybe i used the wrong
ide drivers, but I tried using both the old and the
new. In fact, I tried all the suggestions in ide.txt
doc that comes with the kernel source. Am I barking
up the wrong tree?

Any suggestions as to how to debug this situation
would be most welcome.

Thanks,

GC
