I have not used Gabber, but it is nessesary to make quite a few changes to
/etc/jabber/jabber.xml
jabberd stores the user info in /usr/lib/jabber/

Have you tried to connect using telnet ?   There is a procedure which can be
followed, it is on the jabber website, I do not recall where though. (sorry)

tbh, I found the jadmin mailing list pretty helpful, although it was
debain-user which ultimatly solved my issue.
