pppd not restarting (with persist)

I've been having a problem with pppd over the last couple of months in
that it is not restarting after the connection breaks, even though I'm
using the "persist" option.

I'm using ppp with pppoe for my always-on ADSL connection. In the past,
it has always reconnected when the link broke, but I'm not sure exactly
when it stopped working and what changed. Certainly, none of my ppp
configuration options have changed.

What seems strange is that every time the connection breaks (usually
because the lcp echo request does not get a response three times in a
row), the log file always has a "Terminating with signal 15" error
message. This is why ppp is not restarting, because a SIGTERM causes it
to ignore "persist". I dont see what is sending a SIGTERM to pppd.

None of the bugs reported in the BTS relate to this problem.

Any ideas?
