Re: fsck root file system
This isn't much of an option for you at the moment, but maybe something to consider for the future.
I have 3 linux distros installed.
hdc5 - debian 3.0 r1 (still getting this set up to migrate over)
hdc6 - mandrake 7.2 (which i use most of the time)
hdc7 - mandrake 7.2 (fully set up and in reserve in case i break hdc6. i'm forever experimenting with software)
hdb1 is mounted under /home/user in each distro and is where I keep all my important data.
so, i can check hdc5 and hdc7 while booted with hdc6. when i need to check hdc6 i just boot into one of the others and do it.
granted, this is much more complex and annoying that the other solutions. but, the advantage of multiple distros installed is that you have something to fall back on if your software gets broken, corrupted, whatever. this is really handy for people like me who experiment, install and try new programs, and learn by trying.
