Ack!  Don't run X as root!

Go grab gdm, xdm or kdm, and use that to start X on startup instead.
If this is just a home box and you live alone, kdm has options to log
a user in automatically.

But don't run X as root, avoid doing anything you can do as a normal
user as root.
