Hi Paul,

I had been having the same problem (kernel 2.4.21pre7, XFree86 4.2.1.1, sid).

Telling gdm to restart X on logout seems to work around the problem (set
AlwaysRestartServer=true in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf).  Perhaps there is an
equivalent option for kdm?
