Hit compose character[1], then the appropriate punctuation, then the
letter you're applying it to.

Ex.:  ComposeCharacter-'-e will get you é.


[1] On the console, this is control period.  In X, it's whatever you
bound it to.  In emacs you can use either your console's compose
character or C-x 8 <punctuation> <char>.
