I can think of another method, that made your files vanish.
If you mv your files to /var/www/jschwarz and afterwards mount a new
filesystem over /var/www/jschwarz (or even /var/www),
then your files will be invisible.

So what I suggest is to type:
df /var/www/jschwarz
and if this shows that any dir in this path is a mountpoint, try
to umount it and see if your files are back.
