pppd lcp-echo-failure on mail

I may be asking the impossible but ... I have a serial modem, it works great, 
however when it drops the line debian does not know and so does not 
re-initulise chat to re-link. I inserted into /etc/ppp/peers/provider the 
following ...

lcp-echo-interval 1
lcp-echo-failure 2
holdoff 1

Whick worked great, I was really happy till I tried to send or recieve mail 
via Kmail ! It keeps dropping the line !

At a guess when it talks to a mail server lcp does not echo ?

Any way round it ?
