The */2 is valid, it will work properly.  It's likely a path problem.

If he's on a ppp connection, i'd add something to /etc/ppp/ip-up.d, to
update only when needed.  I'm sure something similar can be done with an
ethernet connection, instead of hitting their server every two minutes
needlessly.
