How did you startx?
#startx
or
#startx &
If you do the second then X is run as a background process and you should be
able to get back to the first console with crtl+alt+F1.
If you do the first then X is run as a foreground process, so your first
console is busy. If you switch back I think you should get the last screen
but the console will not respond.
