Debian not seeing sound card

Hello fellow debs,

I just installed a basic cheap sound card. a compusa $20 'Avance Logic als 4000'.
I'm writing thsi because it doesn't work. The first thing that worries me is
that it doesn't show up in dmesg. So i think that is the real problem, the
system doesn't even admit there is a sound card installed. (by the way, i
know it does work because i also have a seldom used version of windows 2000
which see's and can use the card fine.)

I have apt-get install most of the alsa related drivers and utils and run alsaconf
but for some reason alsa doesnt see a sound card and continues to fail.

<cmustard /var/log>$ sudo modprobe -a sound
<cmustard /var/log>$ lsmod
Module Size Used by
sound 52876 0 (unused)
soundcore 3236 2 [sound]

Here's what happens if i try to open mpg123

<cmustard /var/log>$ mpg123 ~/personal/downloads/with.mp3
High Performance MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 Audio Player for Layer 1, 2 and 3.

Can't open default sound device!

<cmustard /var/log>$ sudo alsaconf
Loading driver:
No ALSA driver installed
Starting ALSA sound driver (version none):modprobe: Can't locate module snd
 failed.
Setting the PCM volume to 100% and the Master output volume to 50%
 No ALSA driver installed
Could not initialize the mixer, the card was probably
 not detected correctly.

I think i may be missing something but don't seem to realize what it is.

I would appreciate any insight you may provide. thank you

-cmus
