I had a similar experience after getting a new printer and never did
solve the problem. In the last few weeks I've tried CUPS, lprng, and pdq
and although I could occasionally print the test page I could never get
any of them working properly. On the other hand good old lpr with
magicfilter is absolutely fine. 

I should say that this is a single-user home system with no need for
remote printing.
