I have had similar issues with using 2,3c509 cards. Have you tried setting
up both cards in /etc/networking/interfaces. Some times these cards need to
be setup during bootup, they don't respond to initializing later. Some
times they just don't get past where you are at now. Quirky cards, at least
the old ones I have used.
