Paul,

Have you used hdparm to improve the performance of the dvd drive?

I have an ATI Radeon VE dual head setup with an LCD and a CRT.
I get the same messages in the X log about it disabling DRI.
I have done nothing to accelerate X, it is just the most recent
from unstable.

Recently I installed a dvd drive and I was getting skipped frames
just like you until I improved the performance of the dvd drive
using hdparm.

See the man page for hdparm(8) or [1] for some tips on using
hdparm.
