FWIW, it's advised to do

<update sources.list to testing>
apt-get update
apt-get install apt dpkg tar ( ... any others anyone?)
apt-get dist-upgrade

... rather than just a straight update; dist-upgrade.

In this case, what does /another/ apt-get dist-upgrade do?
