Most likely there is the "updatedb" and/or "man-db" process searching around
your HD. This slows down *every* box.
"updatedb" enables you to look for a certain file with "locate filename",
while "man-bd" is responsible for the "apropos" database.
If you never use the "locate" command, consider removing the dlocate (or
slocate) package.
