Yep. I'd chime in with the locales theory. I get exactly that behaviour
and output with
$ LANG=C gnucash
$ LANG=en_EN gnucash

It works with
$ LANG=de_DE gnucash

I tried experimenting with LC_CTYPE, too, but that didn't have any
impact.
