Cannot load initrd with kernel 2.4.20

Hi!
Using Woody and a vanilla 2.4.20, I cannot boot with an initial ramdisk.
The kernel was built by
make-kpkg --initrd --config menuconfig --append-to-version -fwrs
kernel_image
I tried both lilo:
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-fwrs
label=linux
read-only
initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.4.20-fwrs
and grub
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-fwrs root=/dev/hda2 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.4.20-fwrs
but with the same effect:
RAMDISK: Couldn't find valid RAM disk image starting at 0.
Freeing initrd memory: 860k freed
cramfs: wrong magic
Booting the 2.4.18-bf2.4 kernel from the distribution works fine.
The following options were used when building the kernel:
- - Loopback device support
- - RAM disk support (4096 Default RAM disk size)
- - Initial RAM disk (initrd) support
- - Compressed ROM file system support
- - ROM file system support
After booting the kernel
mount -o loop /boot/initrd.img-2.4.20-fwrs /mnt
works fine without any additional modules being loaded.
Any help would be appreciated.
TIA,
Kurt
