problems with pilot-link

i have two identical machines, and a sony clie cradle on each's USB
bus. one has an OHCI+EHCI bus, the other one an UHCI bus. both use
hotplug.

the first one works perfectly.

the second one works sporadically. every now and then -- even after
a free reboot -- pilot-xfer will just sit there and tell me to press
the hotsync button. of course i cannot, because i already had to press
the hotsync button to create /dev/ttyUSB0. then it'll just hang there
and nothing happens. occasionally it will even leave pilot-xfer and
khubd in 'D' kernel states, which are unkillable (one of the biggest
flaws if Linux!).

does anyone else experience this?
does anyone have a solution?

thanks!
